Bale's incredible £85.3 million world record fee meant Spurs always had their work cut out to finish the summer spending more than they received, but they got very close.

Figures calculated by transferleaguehistory.co.uk illustrate that Tottenham finished the summer at -£3.08 million.

They actually outspent the Bale fee, spending £103.7 million in total, but further sales of Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Massimo Luongo, Clint Dempsey and Steven Caulker brought income to £106.75 million.
